"Dalvay by the Sea" offers Sea
views in the Grand Tracadie region of Prince Edward Island.
Dalvay-by-the-Sea was commissioned in 1895 as a summer home for Alexander McDonald. McDonald was born in Scotland but moved with his family to the United States during the immigrant boom of the mid - 19th century. He eventually settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where he showed a prowess for business, becoming the first president of Standard Oil and building a considerable personal fortune. McDonald became intrigued with Prince Edward Island's North shore while on vacation with his family in 1895 and commissioned a Victorian summer "cottage" to be built.
Dalvay was built with all local materials in the Queen Anne Revival style with many dormers and gables. More recently, Dalvay has become renowned as "The White Sands Hotel" as featured on the syndicated Sullivan Entertainment series; Road To Avonlea and Anne of Green Gables movies, inspired by the writings of Island author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. The house was designated a national historic site on the centennial anniversary of its completion in 1996
